An Ode to St Valentine

I woke up in the wee hours last night thinking about St. Valentine and the power of love. I realized that there are many types of love – romantic love, Eros, maternal and paternal love, tough love etc – but the one that strikes me as fundamental to any of the above types of love, is self-love. Without this deep understanding that at our core we are love and that this love permeates every cell of our being, we are lost in the illusion of needing something or someone to validate our self worth.  With this in mind I wrote a Valentine to myself and dedicate these vows to St. Valentine – the champion of love.

I promise to love and cherish you

I promise to nurture you and care for you

I promise to listen to you and honor your feelings

I promise to devote time everyday to your needs

I promise to breathe deeply and listen to your
breathe in the silence of the day

I promise to listen to your tears, feel your anger,
and bask in your joy

I promise to acknowledge and savor the love in
and all around you

I promise to honor your wisdom

I promise to express your passion

I promise to listen closely and hear your
whispering in my ear

I promise to see you as the Divine expression
of Life itself

I promise to accept you just as you are and love you,
love you, love you
