Below is a letter I wrote when one of my children was in distress. I decided to share this on Mother’s Day as I know that most of us, mothers and fathers, try our best to smooth the journey for our young ones.

My loves,
I wish I could take your suffering away. I mistakenly thought that by working through my issues I would spare you from experiencing pain. Even if that was remotely possible, I see now that it would have been a disservice to you, as I understand that life is about growth. We must experience the wind and rain, the tempests that ravage us, the wind that blows us off course, the rain that dampens our spirits and folds us into our sorrow and the demon pests that try to eat away at our souls. This suffering is the fertilizer for our growth.
For then comes the sun, only hidden by our clouds, and we give in to it’s warmth and nurturing light. Turning to it we open our petals wide to receive it’s sustenance gathering the energy to infuse our days then gathering it back in while we sleep, resting in that nurturing love so that we wake refreshed to bloom day after day.
So my darlings, I ask you to understand that my imperfections as a mother, though abhorrent to me, may truly be my greatest gift to you as they have forced you to go within and find your greatest strength which is your glorious Self.

I had the great honor to be selected as a “Female Leader” from the Santa Fe Girls School http://santafegirlsschool.org/ for their “Being a Girl Becoming a Leader” benefit. It was gratifying to sit among the diverse group of women leaders who are passionate about enriching the lives of others. Recently I had the privilege to visit the school and after sitting in on a few classes and having lunch with the teachers, walked away with immense gratitude for co-founder Lee Lewin and her staffs’ commitment to providing a school where adolescent girls are encouraged to use their voices and creating an atmosphere where girls are “taught how to think, rather than what to think.” What a refreshing agenda! The small classes sizes (fifteen girls per grade, 6th, 7th and 8th ) enable the girls to take part in very interesting projects one of which is Project Preserve where the girls work along a 9 acre river parcel clearing the land and conducting various field tests. They are also so blessed to have Santa Fe Poet Laureate Joan Logghe teach them poetry writing. It was very clear to me that the faculty has thought deeply about how to best develop each girl’s awareness of their strengths and intelligence by giving them a safe nurturing environment to become the strong, confident women that our world needs. What an honor for me to be honored by them.

I am so happy to present the first pieces of the yantra collection. This has been a dream of my mine since I first saw a book Yantra Book by Madhu Khanna on these ancient art forms and found myself mesmerized by the geometric elements and symbols. They awakened a deep place in my psyche and I stood, transfixed at the images that have been used for centuries in India for meditation. This experience inspired me to explore my inner awareness of this art and create my own yantras using venetian plaster, round boards and my finger to carve into the plaster these ancient symbols. I started my experiment with simple shapes – circles, squares and triangles using the bold colors that I love. Once I started them I couldn’t stop – it was just so fun. Sometimes things that look so simple are really the most profound. The points of light ring grew out of this first attempt of yantras. I then went on to more complex paintings, which brought up words and ideas and resulted in the inner vision jewelry pieces; cuffs, belt buckles, earrings, rings and necklace. The intersection of lines represent a pathway - a journey always leading to the center of existence – which to me is love.

I just had the unique opportunity to witness the ceremony of “Match Day” that takes place at every medical school in the nation on the same day at the same time. It is on this extraordinary day that the future of each fourth year medical student will be revealed as he and she is matched to a hospital residency program according to the students’ top choices, the hospitals top choices and the number of residency slots available at the hospital. This is a momentous day for these outstanding men and women who have spent the last four years slaving over their books and spending endless hours on call (and maybe having just a little bit of fun!) as they find out where they will be working as MD’s for the first time. The match is made via an algorithm – a system that was devised in 1952 to provide a fair system of matching students and hospitals.

We were at the University of Michigan’s med school on this occasion to support our son and his fiancé who would find out where they would wind up for the next three years. Having sat through many, nerve – wracking, nail biting division one basketball games, which they both played in college, I was quite familiar with the stress and anxiety of competitive sports. I had the similar feeling sitting in the ballroom at the U of M as the sound grew louder, nervous glances were exchanged and expectant faces were shrouded in hope and uncertainty while waiting for the high noon countdown before the white envelopes with THE MATCH were distributed.

One by one the envelopes were opened mostly to cheers and smiles and very few tears. As I watched all of these young people and listened as they announced their ‘matches’ I thought how blessed we are to have such smart and courageous young people willing to spend their lives in the pursuit of helping and healing others along life’s journey. It was a beautiful thing. And, our son is now matched!

I woke up in the wee hours last night thinking about St. Valentine and the power of love. I realized that there are many types of love – romantic love, Eros, maternal and paternal love, tough love etc – but the one that strikes me as fundamental to any of the above types of love, is self-love. Without this deep understanding that at our core we are love and that this love permeates every cell of our being, we are lost in the illusion of needing something or someone to validate our self worth. With this in mind I wrote a Valentine to myself and dedicate these vows to St. Valentine – the champion of love.

I promise to love and cherish you

I promise to nurture you and care for you

I promise to listen to you and honor your feelings

I promise to devote time everyday to your needs

I promise to breathe deeply and listen to your
breathe in the silence of the day

I promise to listen to your tears, feel your anger,
and bask in your joy

I promise to acknowledge and savor the love in
and all around you

I promise to honor your wisdom

I promise to express your passion

I promise to listen closely and hear your
whispering in my ear

I promise to see you as the Divine expression
of Life itself

I promise to accept you just as you are and love you,
love you, love you

Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone – may you remember the simple truth that you are love.
Amy

I just finished a long, fun, and exhausting workshop learning to create gesso panels by hand. My teacher, Adam Markovic, taught me the centuries old technique of making the glue paste and finish that the old masters used as a base to then paint their beautiful paintings. It took three long days – the longest was the gesso applying day which was 8 1/2 hours! We started with sanding the panels, then making the glue itself with rabbit skin plus calcium carbonate which we kneaded together. I felt as though I was making bread as the temperature must be perfect, the consistency must be perfect, and the timing of those two processes must be perfect. Yesterday it all came together and we were able stain the gesso with colors. Yeah! It was so much fun and I found that I wanted to make each one a piece of art so decided to concentrate on a few here and work on the rest at home. You can actually keep working on them for months. The one shown here is where I accidentally spilled solvent on it but I really liked what it did. I learned so much about the craft and technique from this workshop and have a deeper appreciation of the artists whose paintings lend such beauty to our world.

For our 29th anniversary, Dec 18th, with Christmas rapidly approaching and too much to do to celebrate out of town, Bill and I decided on a Santa Fe stay-cation. I had recently toured the Inn of the Five Graces, with Sylvia Seret whose son owns the Inn and I fell in love with the beautiful Indian and Afghani textile upholstered furniture and bedding that Sylvia and her husband used to decorate the East meets Southwest living spaces. And the tiled mosaic bathrooms that Sylvia designed are incredibly detailed works of art. The entire Inn is so lush and sumptuous that I knew this would be a special place to celebrate. Their showroom/store Seret and Sons down the street is a visual feast of wonders collected from countries along the Silk Road.
Dinner our first night at Brian Knox’s Aqua Santa – my favorite restaurant in Santa Fe – was delicious as usual (I always have the caesar salad and the shredded lamb with braised greens and crispy shallots – so so good). We slept beautifully under our Afghani bedspread and blankets and were ready to be tourists in our own town.

Our first stop was the San Miguel Chapel directly across from the Inn. It is claimed to be the oldest church in the United States as there is evidence that the site has been occupied by humans since 1300AD. The Tlaxcala Indians from Mexico who came to New Mexico with Spanish settlers built the original chapel in 1610. The well-preserved Church enchanted me especially when I read that spirits of Indians are still felt there and that some visitors experience spiritual activity. There is a sign that asks visitors not to be afraid, as the chapel spirits are friendly. Love that!

A block away from the San Miguel Chapel is the Loretto Chapel built as a school by Bishop Lamy for the sisters of Loretto and famous for the spiral staircase that was built by a mysterious, traveling carpenter. The construction of the staircase has baffled engineers and to date no one has ever figured out how this feat of engineering was accomplished. With the two 360 degree turns and no visible means of support, it is truly a miraculous staircase and worth a visit. The rosary garden in front of the chapel was sweet.

After a few hours of Christmas shopping at some of our favorite stores by the Plaza; Doodlets – a store filled with cool and kitschy toys, lights, cards, folk art and so much more (great for stocking stuffers – we always buy Beeman’s clove and black jack gum; Spirit clothing store, where I find great sweaters and trousers; and my friend Eva Jackson’s store Sign of the Pampered Maiden for easy affordable clothes, we were hungry. We decided to see if we could get into Café Pasqual’s – a favorite restaurant of both tourists and locals. The food is a fusion of Central American and New Mexican flavors. The décor is festive with lights, chili ristras, Diego Rivera type art and a lot of other things thrown in. I had a grilled free-range chicken breast sandwich with manchego cheese, caramelized onions on toasted chile-cornbread with a kale salad and loved it! Pasqual’s is a colorful restaurant with colorful food and colorful characters. We ran into an old friend, solar design architect Mark Chalom in his colorful sweatshirt designed by his wife, Betty of Tewa Tees. What better place than Santa Fe to be a tourist and a local?

We ended our stay-cation with dinner at Bistro 315 with another delicious meal and went back to our cozy room and watched the snow start to fall on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Our little get-a-way, a week before Christmas settled our nerves, expanded our awareness of our town and renewed the deep love we have for each other. There is so much more to see and experience in our hometown that we decided to treat ourselves to a stay-cation more often.

We had a fun party last night. It was a cold wintery night so it was nice that new friends and old friends stopped by. Donna Lynch, a board member of St Elizabeth’s Shelter, wowed everyone with her amazing positive energy. Laura Sullivan, director of development of the International Folk Art Market, dropped off a beautiful woven basket made by the Khoe Bushmen of Namibia, members of the Mud Hut trading Co-Op, which was so sweet. Applications for the 2012 market are in and the difficult job of selection is taking place at the moment. I also had a chance to visit with Caren Shiozaki, head of the board of Girl’s Inc. I have visited both Girl’s Inc. and St. Elizabeth’s shelter in the last week and am so grateful for the services these organizations provide. Girl’s Inc. continues their programs that teach and inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The photo I included shows the paper tree in their downtown, Santa Fe location. Every girl that attends Girls Inc. during the year adds their paper hand print to the branches showing them that they are all leaves of the tree which is Girls Inc. La Casa Familia, the family division of St. Elizabeth’s shelter, has just brought their facility up to Green standards making sure that all of the families are as warm as can be during our cold winter. St. Elizabeth’s has also just added a medical recovery wing to their building so that homeless men recovering from surgery have a place to go to fully heal. These are such great things for our community. I was humbled as I visited these sites, and saw how the staff of these organizations care for these people in such dire straits. I am so grateful for these everyday heroes who make such a difference in the lives of others.

This holiday I want to give the gift of love and acceptance to everyone I encounter – be it a smile, a forgiveness or just a great big hug. I wish you and yours the best that life has to offer this holiday season and look forward to continuing the conversation in 2012!

I had the great fortune to see the exhibit, “Inspiration and Vision” at the Ferragamo Museum (http://www.museoferragamo.it/) during my last visit to Florence, Italy. It was truly inspiring to see what sparked the imagination of the man whose handmade shoes were coveted by actresses, royalty and the worlds movers and shakers giving him the moniker ‘Shoemaker of Dreams’. Paintings by the Paris Avant Garde, animals, bones, insects, birds, flowers, color, textiles, ceramics – in essence the world -inspired Ferragamo’s designs. He was equally fueled by his passion to make comfortable shoes for women and to help people encumbered by pain to be able to walk again. I instantly felt a deep connection to this man as I seek to make beautiful objects that spark an inner awareness – the combination of beauty and healing which Ferragamo was striving for. He mentions several times in his autobiography his belief in reincarnation. He felt he was born with instinctive knowledge of the art of shoemaking, which was due to his many lifetimes in this profession. This seemed unusual for a man born in a small village outside of Naples, Italy in 1898 and sparked my interest in his life even further.

What encouraged and inspired me as I read his autobiography were his utter passion and commitment to his work. The consequences of his unwillingness to compromise his high standards resulted in bankruptcy a few times along the course of his career but he would not give up. His story helped me to see that the road to success can be treacherous at times and it takes great fortitude to pick yourself up time after time with a fresh perspective and honor who you are and what you are called to do. It also strengthened my commitment to creating products of the highest quality. I, like Ferragamo, cannot give to the world anything but my best. It is my commitment to allow myself the time and space to fully develop my art, with the intent to bring beauty and meaning into the world and to awaken people to their true nature, which in my truth is Love. I use my resources to utilize the craftsmanship of true artisans, pay a fair wage, use high quality materials and to have my company anchored by a support team that honors and respects the integrity of one another and the world around them.
This I feel is the path to true success.
