Meow Wolf’s “The Due Return”
May 19th, 2011
Friday night was the opening of The Due Return – an installation by the Santa Fe artists collective Meow Wolf at the Center for Contemporary Art. According to Vince Kadlubek, co-founder of Meow Wolf, the collective “has wanted to expand the persona of the SF art world and culture market for a long time…” and with this installation they did just that!
After signing a release form, visitors walk through a cave and enter a magical world anchored by a huge wooden ship. “Trees” made of biodegradable polyester plastic are illuminated and change color, twinkling “stars” change color as they light up the sky.
Below decks, the 35 artists in the collective plus 100 volunteers built six sleeping pods individually decorated – each an installation unto themselves. There is so much to see and learn about this fabulous ship and her story – you must go!
I was fortunate to speak with Vince as 20 and 30 yr olds streamed in. It was really exciting to have an exhibit representing the energy and artistry of Santa Fe’s younger artists in one of our town’s prominent galleries. I am looking forward to seeing their work in more spaces like these.
