My first idea was to paint a still life with the wild dahlia I found at the farmer's market using oil on venetian plaster. I started painting the center of the flower and really got into it only to find that when I finished, I didn't like it. My work needs to have movement and movement to me is broad strokes, texture, and the unexpected. I switched to watercolor for the petals and just let the painting sit for a few days until I thought of using lace as a way to create the spiraling petals which I found so amazing. So, you will see on the right, my humble interpretation of the amazing dahlia. |
